I have inserted a poll (look right) to make the decision easy for both Cammy and Peter whether or not to wear a kilt when travelling.

I do not intend to hold a view on this matter as it would be unfair on the anti-kilt wearers. However, since we are on the subject of kilt wearing I thought it would be a good idea to look for guidance on how the various Scottish regiments, who bravely fought and died for our freedom, dealt with the difficult subject of what to wear when travelling? Unfortunately, I can't find any evidence of what they wore when travelling to battle, must have been shorts or something like that, so no guidance for us in that respect! However, the Sottish regiments did wear their kilts with pride in the first World War on the battle fields where they spent months in filthy conditions putting up with disease trench foot, lice, rats, Germans and death and did they complain about their kilts being uncomfortable?

My fives minutes of research on wearing a kilt has revealed that,

It is a very practical garment to wear in battle, since you didn't have to unbutton numerous buttons to go to pee pee which occupied your hands (hand) for that time, making you vulnerable to attack.
Fives minutes what do you expect!

This poll is intended to instil some form of cohesion and discipline and to also act as guidance for those who are having difficulty in deciding on what to wear. Because where would we be if we didn't have any discipline, that's right France!

Anyone for a 99?

Quasi has just invoked rule 25, subsection 3, para 4.

In honour of the Lions Tour in 1974, each day everyone shall have one 99 call. Upon hearing the 99, everyone must down their drink.(ed - oh my word, this is a recipe for disaster.)

Just to get you in the bevvying frame of mind, I thought "Little Old Wine Drinker Me" would be an appropriate song to listen to. It is certainly easier to remember than N'kosi Sikelel' iAfrika. I think i'll change the last to post "Every man has their Tinto".

Quasi has requested this what appears on the face of it bizarre video, which reluctantly I have to post here, although after watching I have to admit is a truly superb and hilarious video. So when we take off on our flight to SA Gerbull must start singing "Aweem away, aween away"

Through my research I thought that this may be an interesting place to go to but the have foot tapping jazz!!!

"The Radium Beerhall is the oldest surviving bar and grill in Johannesburg, with a genuinely historic ambience that's just as enticing as the good food on the menu; as authentic as the foot-tapping live jazz that makes the embossed tin ceiling vibrate in sympathy."

Apparently the place to be seen in Jo'burg is the Park Hyatt Hotel,

"a trendy spot to be seen, especially for an after-work drink"

So we'll stay well clear of that! Although close to the Hyatt is Katzy's which is a

New York-style cigar bar located in the plush Firs mall in Rosebank, Katzy' s is perfect for that pre-dinner cocktail or post-dinner cigar. There's a popular grill-house opposite where many of the early diners are often headed, but we reckon the classy piano acts and friendly banter on the neighbouring tables might want to make you hang around a while. The bar specialises in whiskeys, cognacs and the aforementioned cigars and suits and glammed up Jo'burg girls in power skirts and designer gear make up much of the clientele. Gets rowdy later on when the ties come off and the bourbon starts to flow. Go Katzy!

So again, we'll stay really well clear of this one.

The Challenge

This trip may have been a surprise to us all but standards should not fall as a result of this surprise. We need to all keep up the standards expected of us and that we expect of others. To that end the Committee met and decided one of the challenges for the Lions 09 trip. Please post other challenges or "compulsories" for discussion.

Challenge #1
You must wear something which is lion related after check-in on Friday 26 June when we meet Baloo and Tweag - who will waiting with our cold beers and wearing something lion related also.

Please make yourself familiar with the terms and conditions of this challenge as failure is not an option, see below.

T&C's

No opting out.
No smart a-rse alternatives eg wearing a Lions top.
T&C's can be readily changed on a moments whim but not the first two as these are written in stone, so they are!
Penalty, the penalty will be decided by a democratic vote. Should there be a tie in the votes then the most gruesome penalty will take precedent.
The Committee's decision is final.

These rules are here to stop anarchy breaking out. I am sure you'll all agree that these rules are measured and not overwhelming, just right. Because where would we be if there were too many rules? Germany. And where would be if we didn't have any rules? France.

Lions Trip 2009

Well soon we'll be off to watch the Lions run rampant in Petoria, hopefully giving the Spingboks a good old fashioned mauling and I can't wait! The Hamilton boys will be high up on the South African veldt where the air is thin and little breezes blow, phw, phw, phw. Yes we will enjoy ourselves but there will be serious side to this adventure, there will be no playing of cards, no hooliganism, no vandalism and no bevvying we'll be there just to watch rugby at the highest level!

The Magnificent 8

Our gang of top ex-rugby players are Tin Tin (Harry Luck), Wob (Bernardo O'Reilly), Gerbull(Britt ), Shorty (Chico), Quasi(Lee), and our intrepid reporter Flash (Vin) are all South Africa bound. Where will meet up with the advance party Tweag (Calvera, who is now a good guy) and our logistics expert Baloo(Chris). Together we will sing from the top of voices that we have climbed that sunshine (thank me later boss) mountain where the little breezes bow, phw phw phw and reached the high veldts to watch the glorious lions in all their magical majesty!

The Flight

Our trip starts off on Thursday 25 June at 6pm at Glasgow when we fly down out to Jo'burg arriving the next day. As we will be flying south there will be little or no jet lag which means, if we get a good nights sleep, we will arrive in South Africa as fresh as daisies!

We that's the theory! My guess is that due to insurmountable peer pressure, not withstanding the free drinks provided by BA, we'll just cave in like a cabinet ministers and drink. Although, as everyone knows when flying you get dehydrated so following medical advice we'll have to drink plenty of fluids. Another good reason for having a couple of drinks on the flight, forced down our throats or otherwise, is that it thins your blood. Why is this important? Answer - DVT. This killer condition is caused when a clot of blood flies through your arteries from your legs into your brain - and for some of our party this may take some time. Many people who worry about DVT are advised by their doctors to take some form of blood thinning medication eg Aspirin. So not only is having a couple of beers on the flight good fun but it could also save your life and since it is free saves you buying an Asprin and who are we to argue with medical opinion.
